What is biogas? . . .

Biogas is the easiest & cheapest to produce biofuel. It is abundant & may be the most eco-
friendly among all biofuels.

Biogas and the science behind its production (known also as anaerobic digestion) &
digester designs & principles of operation are not covered in this website. The following
links and many others provide substantial information:

On-line tutorial lessons covering anaerobic digestion of animal wastes, digester designs
& operating principles are available. They include videos of an actual construction,
explanations that use animation, common problems to avoid & innovative solutions.

The devices used to make biogas are called biogas digesters. The HBS or
Home Biogas System and the MS PBD or Multi-Stage Philippine BioDigester
are discussed below:

HBS or Home Biogas System

The HBS (Home Biogas System) is a low-cost & easy-to-build biogas digester
developed for tropical countries. It uses readily-available materials & it can be
built as a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project by most farmers.

By comparison, the popular China Fixed Dome (CFD) digester is designed
for temperate or cold climates. It is basically built underground to be situated
below the frost line. The India Floating Cover (IFC) digester is designed primarily
for use with “gobar” or cow dung. Its cover is expensive & prone to operational problems.
The Tubular Polyethylene Digester (TPD) is very cheap & very easy to build
but is flimsy & not very durable.

The HBS is designed for the efficient production of biogas for use as cooking fuel
in small households. It can be fed with animal manure but works best with pig,
cow or poultry manure. The 5.0 m3 (cubic meter) HBS unit can be built for
under 15,000 Philippine Pesos (U$300).  When fed with at least 20 L/D (liters/day)
of manure, it can produce 2.0 m3 of biogas that can be used to cook twice a day.

MS PBD or Multi Stage Philippine BioDigester

The MS PBD (Multi-Stage Philippine BioDigester) is a digester system
designed for large swine, cattle and poultry farms. Its primary purposes are efficient
production & collection biogas to mitigate the escape of biogas into the atmosphere
(as it is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that worsens Global Warming) & to use biogas
as a fuel (to cheaply generate abundant mechanical, electrical & thermal power.)

Like its sibling (the HBS), the MS PBD features innovative ideas that allow
compact design, agitation & easy sediment removal. Features that also makes it
less expensive & more economical.

Biogas systems installed to specifically prevent or mitigate the escape of biogas
into the atmosphere towards helping prevent Global Warming are eligible as CDM
(Clean Development Mechanism) projects of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change) & the Kyoto protocol.

In addition to building your biogas system, we offer consultations pertaining to
CDM project qualification, evaluation & documentation to properly plan your investment.
